Cambodian migrant worker, Phalla Ratana, 24, was among the victims of a 30-story building under construction collapse in Bangkok following a powerful earthquake. The Cambodian embassy is now working to assist the family and pursue compensation
A second Cambodian migrant worker has been confirmed dead after the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Bangkok on March 28, 2025. The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training announced on April 17 that Phalla Ratana, 24, lost his life in the disaster, according to an autopsy report from the Thai National Police Hospital.
The powerful quake, triggered by the aftershocks of an 8.2-magnitude earthquake near Mandalay, Myanmar, caused the collapse of a 30-story building under construction in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, trapping more than 100 workers inside.
Now, over two weeks into the search and rescue operation, authorities have confirmed 32 deaths, while 62 individuals remain missing.
In response, the Embassy of Cambodia in Thailand has covered support for Ratana’s family, including cremation costs and processing the documents to repatriate his body to Cambodia. The embassy is also following up to secure the compensation for the family of the deceased from the Thai side.
On March 31, the ministry confirmed that Cambodian worker Meas Sawang, a 23-year-old male from the Malai District of Banteay Meanchey province, had died in the building collapse.
In addition to the fatalities, injuries among Cambodian migrant workers have been reported. Soeun Samnang, 44, a migrant worker in Thailand originally from Kampong Thom province, broke her heel due to the earthquake. She has since returned to her hometown for medical treatment.
